A funny, but touching story about a very special boy.
August Pullman is an ordinary 10-year-old born with an extraordinarily different face.
He feels ordinary, but only inside. Ordinary kids don't make other kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go.
August has been homeschooled by his parents all his life, so when he is sent to a real school for the first time, he must work hard to persuade his new classmates that underneath it all he's just like them.
What I enjoyed most about this story, and what you will too, is that August really is just a normal 10-year-old.
He has an Xbox, is a mental Star Wars fan (his room is filled with action figures and posters from the first six movies), and likes butt jokes - like when he finds out from his parents that his new headmaster's name is Mr Tushman.
Overall, while this story is very funny in some places, it also deals with some serious and mature issues, making it best for older readers eight and over.
