A giant-sized adventure, and a Roald Dahl classic.
For over ten years now, David Walliams has been entertaining and delighting children of all ages with his hilarious and heartfelt novels. Roald Dahl was David’s hero and biggest source of inspiration for many of his books, so any of Roald's story would be a great choice for fans of David and his work.
In this classic adventure by Roald Dahl, little Sophie is in bed one night, when she is suddenly snatched away by a giant and taken to Giant Country.
Initially frightened that she will be eaten, Sophie soon learns that the giant who took her is known as the Big Friendly Giant (or the BFG for short), who catches dreams and blows them into children’s houses while they are sleeping.
However, Giant Country is also home to nine other giants, who enjoy eating children every night, so Sophie and the BFG come up with a daring plan to get rid of these fearsome giants permanently.
If your kids are fans of David Walliams, then they’ll enjoy this story.
The BFG doesn’t know a lot of English (he says in the story that quite often he is left instead of right), so he uses a lot of made-up words, like ‘elefunt’ instead of ‘elephant’, or ‘babblement’ instead of ‘conversation’, which kids will enjoy reading.
And of course, this being a Roald Dahl story, there are lots of creative new inventions that kids will enjoy learning about as well, like the snozzcumber (a vegetable similar to a cucumber, but with a disgusting taste) and frobscottle (a drink similar to lemonade, except that the bubbles in it go down instead of up, resulting in a rude surprise for anyone who drinks it).
There are also lots of pictures from the talented illustrator Quentin Blake (who has also worked with David on some of his first novels) that kids will enjoy as well, like when Sophie sees the nine giants for the first time.
Overall, this is a funny and exciting story from a classic author, and perfect for fans of David Walliams and his novels.
