Just keep an eye on this kiwi for me, will you?
The number one thing you have to remember to do while reading this book is to keep an eye on the kiwi.
It's really important that you do this, as Kiwi keeps doing dumb stuff. He doesn't like being told this to his face (and I sure hope he isn't reading this right now), but he's a real dumb-dumb.
Kiwi wants to go hunting for huhu grubs and worms and prove to the narrator that he's not a dumb-dumb, but a very clever and cunning kiwi. But the huhu grubs and worms have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Will the gullible Kiwi be able to outsmart them and prove once and for all that he isn't a dumb-dumb?
I think this book would be a good choice if your kids are too old for picture books, but are not yet ready for full-size chapter books.
Even though this book has 64 pages, there is not a lot of text, as most of the book is made up of Scott's hand-drawn illustrations.
It is also pretty easy for kids to tell who's talking, as the kiwi's lines are in black and the narrator's lines are in turquoise.
In some cases, the narrator will sometimes speak directly to the reader (like with Mo Whillems's Pigeon series), asking them questions like "I hope you kept an eye on that kiwi. You didn't let him get into any trouble, did you?"
Overall, this is a funny, interactive story about a slow-witted but lovable kiwi, perfect for children who are just starting out with chapter books.
