A quacking great story from a talented author
UK author Jez Alborough has made a name for himself with his bestselling series about the over-confident Duck and his long-suffering friends Sheep, Frog and Goat.
Now, here's my review of the book that started it all, Duck in the Truck.
One day, Duck is driving his truck home from the market, when his truck hits a rock in the track, flies through the air, and ends up stuck in a large puddle of mud.
Duck's friends Frog and Sheep (who drives a jeep) all try to help Duck push his truck out of the mud, but with no success.
Just as the trio are about to give up, Goat overhear's Duck's loud complaining. Will Goat and his motorboat be able to get Duck's truck back on the road again?
If your kids have read about any of Duck's other misadventures, they'll enjoy this one. There are four books in this series featuring Duck and his friends, and this one is the first.
Told with simple rhyming text (eg: "This is the duck driving home in the truck. This is the track which is taking him back"), kids will enjoy finding out whether or not Duck's truck ever makes it out of the mud.
Jez is also a talented artist, and this book by him certainly shows this, from the close-up picture of Duck, Sheep and Frog trying to push Duck's truck out of the mud, right down to smaller details like the duck hood ornament on the front of Duck's truck.
There's a lot of appeal for parents as well, as they'll no doubt appreciate the book's lesson about working together to try and solve a problem.
Overall, this is a funny rhyming story featuring a cast of lovable main characters, perfect for fans of Jez and his work.
