The Underworld awaits...
Note: This book is recommended for readers aged 16 and up.
Reasons: Violence, sexual references and mature themes.
Deina will spend her whole life in the House of Hades as a Soul Severer, a select few tasked with helping souls reach the Underworld. But when the tyrannical Orpheus promises a vast fortune to the Severer who can retrieve his wife, Eurydice, from her prison in the Underworld, Deina and a band of heroes will risk everything for freedom.
Inspired by ancient Greek myths, (but continually asking the question "What if?"), this is a sprawling fantasy epic with heroism and betrayal.
There is plenty of action and danger in Deina's quest, such as when she and the other heroes must face off against Cerberus, the three-headed dog tasked with guarding the Underworld's entrance.
Katharine and Elizabeth are fantastic world-builders too, as Diena's quest takes her from the vast seas of Greece to the darkest depths of the Underworld.
If you're a fan of Rick Riordan (who cut his teeth on modernising Greek myths and legends with his Percy Jackson series), you'll enjoy this story. This is the first book in the series, but there are more on the way.
Overall, this is an original Greek fantasy, but still grounded firmly in reality, which will have you on the edge until the very end.
