Think you know everything about fairies? You don't.

Twelve-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl is looking to restore his family's lost fortune with his latest scheme: kidnapping a fairy and holding it for ransom. But the fairy he captures, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon agency, has some powerful friends. And they're not afraid to fight back.

If your kids are into books like Harry Potter, they'll enjoy this one. There are eight books in total in this series, and this is the first.

Colfer has a lot of fun re-imagining the fairy world as a high-tech agency, with lots of cool gadgets like blasters and jetpack wings.

There is plenty of Colfer's trademark humour as well, like the fact that LEPrecon is a pun on the word leprechaun.

Also, as well as all the humour, there is a serious environmental theme throughout the book, since the fairies are forced to live underground because of the damage humans have done.

Overall, this is a fun high-tech story from a talented author, and a must for fans of this genre.
